Botox Q & A

What is a Botox service?

Botox service refers to injections of botulinum toxin – one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin able to block the communication between your nerve cells and muscles. This forces the muscles to relax and prevents wrinkles from forming.

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles are creases in your skin; hence the terms frown and smile lines. Repetitive facial movements create indentations in the skin. When you are young, your face smoothes out once you stop frowning, but, as you age, skin loses some of its flexibility. Every time you create an indentation, you crease the skin a little more until one day you have a wrinkle.

How does Botox work?

Botox helps relax the facial muscles, so you don’t create indentations. Technically, it does this by blocking the release of a biochemical called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is what triggers muscle contractions. Once injected, the toxin in Botox softens the lines and smoothes the skin by keeping acetylcholine in check.

The idea that it paralyzes your face is a fallacy. The goal is only to relax the muscles, so you retain that smooth, flawless skin even as you grow older. Botox is safe in the hands of a professional such as a dermatologist.

What to expect when getting a Botox injection?

Botox is an almost painless treatment. The doctor may use a numbing cream, but the needles are so thin that you should not feel much anyway. The doctor will mark the injection points with a pencil before starting.

The injection sites will depend on what lines you are trying to avoid. For example, the injection sites will be different when treating crow’s feet versus frown lines.

The procedure takes just a few minutes and you can return to normal activity right away.
